Here at Top Draw, WordPress is our CMS (Content Management System) of choice. We have enjoyed much success developing websites within this framework over the past couple of years, and our clients are grateful for the ability to manage their own sites. Here are just a few reasons why we prefer WordPress.
1. It’s open source
“Open Source” means that the code is open and freely available. That means no license fees, user seat fees or restrictions on what you can or can’t do. It also means that anyone can make it better and build on it. With hundreds of people working on WordPress, the system is kept up to date and new features are added all the time. “Closed source”, or proprietary content management systems, don’t typically receive the same amount of developer time. They can also suffer from product management that doesn’t align with what people really want. And changes cost A LOT!
2. It’s easy to use
Since WordPress originated as a blogging platform, day to day tasks, such as creating and managing content, are very smooth and user-friendly. Everything from logging in to adding images and pages to sorting out news posts has been built with usability in mind.
This is extremely important for us. We want to give our clients the ability to make minor modifications to their websites after launch, without requiring knowledge of HTML or other coding practices. In fact, you don’t need to be too concerned about “breaking” the site. If you add text or an image, and something goes wrong, you can always go back to the latest revision of the page. Handy, isn’t it?
3. It’s easy to maintain
Recently, I logged into the administrator section of my personal WordPress website and found that there was a new version available. With a single click of a mouse, WordPress was updated. Upgrading used to be a painful process that was often riddled with complications. Now, I click the update button with no hesitation.
4. Lots of plugins
One of my favorite aspects of WordPress is its fantastic plug-in availability, which is being expanded constantly. Plugins extend features and functionality beyond the base set to new, uncharted territory. If you need a Twitter sharing button on your site, for example, simply search the plugins section and you’ll find multiple options to meet your needs. WordPress’ impressive one-step plugin process makes adding features very easy. Keep in mind that plugins can be written by anyone, and not all of them are created equal.
Can you sense our excitement about this great development platform? Tell us what you need your website to do and our developers and WordPress will make it happen! Remember that anyone can build a WordPress site, but it takes the expertise of our programmers, designers and content strategists to take the great features of WordPress, integrate custom coding and design and create the quality of websites in our portfolio!
